“Lactation Lessons From Leanna”

Lactation Lessons From Leanna has everything you need to know about lactation, but it’s different than the rest. Instead of writing it like a novel, this book has been written in lessons similar to a Q&A. Nobody wants to have to flip through hundreds of pages to find the answer to their question. Flip to the detailed outline in the beginning of the book and easily be able to find the topic you have in mind. It’s extremely organized. It’s easy to read. Information is clear and straight to the point. Lists are bullet pointed for quick referencing. This book will bring clarity to all your lactation questions.

When asked the reasons why I wrote this book, it is because I wanted an easy to understand reference for all education levels. I noticed most breastfeeding books are written like novels with a vague table of contents. You have to flip through hundreds of pages to hunt for your answer. I wanted to write something more like a Q&A. I made an outline of all the topics discussed at the beginning of the book. This book is an extremely organized easy read that anyone can reference.

My goals are to improve lactation education in every home. I would love to see this book being recommended by lactation professionals and obstetric staff. It is a dream of mine to get it in hospital gift shops and maternity units.

Tongue Tie Educational Video Teaching Tip

This incredibly useful, creative and educational video tip by MaryAnn O’Hara, MD, MPH is excellent for teaching lactation professionals, aspiring lactation specialists, breastfeeding peer counselors and even parents HOW to understand (and teach) tongue tie  what is is, how it can affect breastfeeding and what clipping entails. Dr. O’Hara’s approach is innovative, applicable and brilliant. I must say so myself, it’s quite fun to do as well. But I worn you, it takes a bit of practice, so practice at home in front of a mirror first!

I’d like to note that I heard about this video via Lisa Green, DNP, RN, who mentioned it during one of her lectures that was a part of ASU’s Clinical Lactation Management program.

Do you have any educational videos in mind that you’d like to share? Perhaps one that helps better illustrate a concept or another that has incredible eye-catching graphics. If it relates to lactation, contact Galactablog with your ideas! Also, check out Galactablog’s Youtube Video channel. Breastfeeding-related topics are categorized and arranged as different playlists. Again, if you’d like me to add any videos you find particularly effective, don’t be shy, let me know!

Free WHO Training Course on Child Growth Assessment

The World Health Organization (WHO)WHO is offering a free Training Course on Child Growth Assessment. It is geared towards health professionals and is available completely online. WHO points out that this training course:

“It is intended primarily for health care providers who measure and assess the growth of children or who supervise these activities. The course is designed for use over 3 1/2 days. It teaches how to measure weight, length and height, how to interpret growth indicators, investigate causes of growth problems and counsel caregivers.”

Click here to access the course modules and growth records.

Course director’s and facilitator’s resource files can be found here.

This is a fantastic resource for lactation specialists or those aspiring to be. Definitely don’t miss out on this free educational opportunity. As lactation specialists, we need to be able to read and interpret the WHO growth charts to ensure breastfeeding is going smoothly, infants are getting enough milk and growing properly. Additionally, we need to be able to explain the results to the families we work with and to be able to catch underlying issues before they become problematic.
